Windpark Waalwijk
Technical Management at Windpark Waalwijk; made for Enius
The challenge
The client wants to continue operating Windpark Waalwijk for at least another five years, with safety and performance as key priorities. The wind farm consists of GE 1.5 turbines, a model that has become increasingly rare in the Benelux region. As a result, the number of maintenance providers with sufficient expertise is limited, and standard maintenance contracts with performance guarantees are hardly available.
The client was looking for a party capable of taking ownership, providing in-depth technical expertise and working with specialised partners to keep the wind farm financially viable.
Our approach
At the time of takeover, the wind farm was operating with very low availability. This was the result of several structural technical issues and deferred maintenance.
Enius began with extensive technical inspections and a detailed analysis of historical fault and production data. Based on these findings, a practical and actionable improvement plan was developed.
Working closely with the maintenance partner, structural technical improvements were implemented and deferred maintenance was brought up to the required standard.
Wind turbines in this stage of their lifecycle require continuous attention and rapid decision-making. For this reason, all internet connections and communication structures were redesigned, enabling full integration of the wind farm into the Enius Control Room.
From this Control Room, the wind farm is monitored 24/7. Faults can be analysed immediately, reset remotely where possible and directed to the maintenance partner when required.
In addition to technical management, integration with energy trading has also been implemented. When a turbine goes offline, downtime information is automatically communicated to the PPA provider through API connections, allowing market positions to be adjusted and traded on the intraday market. This helps minimise production losses from both a technical and commercial perspective.
Why these services made the difference
Ageing wind turbine technology comes with specific challenges. Expertise is scarce, maintenance providers often do not offer all-inclusive service contracts, and production guarantees are generally unavailable. This requires ownership and strong operational control. Enius has both the technical expertise and organisational capability to fulfil that role.
The asset management team for Windpark Waalwijk includes specialists in wind turbine technology, electrical engineering, IT/OT integration, financial management and energy trading. This integrated approach ensures that not only technical availability is restored, but that costs, risks and revenues are actively managed as well.
In addition, Enius has its own service team for rapid on-site interventions, enabling practical and operational issues to be resolved quickly and pragmatically.
